For a working van, the load area is the important bit and this one is useful. It takes three Euro pallets or an 8x4 sheet, the space is square, and access looks good from the side or rear. Payload up to 1,276kg is enough for most jobs, but it sits behind the Transit Custom and some Stellantis vans. Bit annoying that the range is limited right now too: no crew cab, high roof or shuttle version. The starting price is not cheap either.

I’ve driven T6s on long family runs, and this is where it makes sense. The cabin has loads of usable room, the revised dash is easier to live with, and it works well for holidays or camper-style use. For people and luggage, the 150 hp single-turbo 2.0 TDI is enough. I would not buy the BiTDI though. Also check every electrical function before handing over money: airbag warnings, safety systems, switches, the lot. The sliding door can act up too.

Been driving working vans for years, and this Transporter gets the basics right. The steering is light, visibility is very good, and the rear sensors help when you are squeezing into tight sites. Ride quality was impressive even empty, which is not always the case with a panel van. The 148hp diesel with the eight-speed auto looks like the sensible setup for daily work. It is not exciting, but it does not need to be. One small gripe: the steering has less feel than older Transit Customs.

My take: buy a T6 as a people carrier, not as a hard-worked cargo van. The 2.0 TSI is worth a look if it only does family trips and you don’t want diesel hardware hanging over you. On the diesel side, the 150 TDI drives fine, but it comes with the usual EGR, DPF, AdBlue and dual-mass flywheel concerns. DSG is nice in traffic, yeah, but only with a proper service record. Gearbox oil changes are not optional on these.

I’ve driven T5s as work vans, and the thing that stands out is how normal it feels on the road. It does not steer like an old cargo van. The suspension holds up well and the brakes are strong, even when the van is loaded. You get a huge usable space too, especially with the removable rear seats. Just check the sliding door closely: worn rollers make it rattle and shut badly. On high-mileage examples, inspect the sills, rear door and chassis rails for rust before talking price.

The cab is a decent place to spend a shift. Wind and road noise stay low, the seat has proper adjustment and lumbar support, and the ride is comfortable without letting the van roll about too much. VW has put nearly everything into the touchscreen, which I normally dislike in a working van. But the climate controls sit in a fixed bar at the bottom, so at least you are not digging through menus just to change the fan speed. Still, I would rather have a few more real buttons when wearing gloves.

The load area is the bit that caught my attention. There is much more room between the wheelarches than the old Transporter, plus a load-through hatch now. That makes a real difference if you carry boards, cases or bulky kit every day. Check payload carefully though, because the range goes from 767kg to 1280kg depending on version. That is a big gap and people will get caught out if they just buy on trim level. Shame VW skips the Ford L-shaped bulkhead option, I have used that layout and it is handy.

Been driving medium vans for years and the new Transporter is easy to place in town. Big mirrors, clear view out and a tight turning circle take some stress out of deliveries. It stays settled at motorway speeds too, even with a load. Steering is light and not very chatty, but it turns in neatly for a van. The 148hp diesel looks like the sensible middle ground; I would not want the 109hp one fully loaded on regular fast runs.
